Pumpkin (a super food?)

Thanks to all who have posted on our Facebook page & are sharing it.

Today I have received many donations for the National MS Society Muck Fest Run! The goal was $200 and we are up to $245! You guys are awesome!!

Thank You!

The mud race that I will be participating in will be this Saturday, August 3rd at 9:00 am in Belle Isle, Detroit. Come support my mom and I as I make my way through 5 miles of filthy great obstacles...

Let's get dirty and wipe out MS!

As for the pumpkins...

Check out this article I stumbled upon.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/05/pumpkin-health-benefits_n_1936919.html

Who would of thought pumpkins can basically do it all!
From this article I was inspired to make a smoothie centered around pumpkin.

 Here are the ingredients:
(recipe makes two smoothies)
Ice (6-7 cubes)
Almond Milk (fill blender until the ice cubes are covered)
Almond Butter (3/4 cup)
Frozen Bananas (1.5)
Blueberries (1/2 cup)
Cinnamon (a couple shakes)
Nutmeg (a couple shakes)
Vanilla Extract (5-6 drops)
Pumpkin Puree (1 cup)

How they help the symptoms of MS:

ALMONDS
Provide brain energy to produce ATP- also a good source of protein & good fatty acids.

BLUEBERRIES
A potent anti-oxident with an anti-aging compound

PUMPKIN
Helps the cell's mitochondria get rid of toxic free radicals and produce ATP.

PUMPKIN SEEDS (NOT INCLUDED
IN SMOOTHIE)
Helps mood, impulsivity and chronic pain! So eat up!

MOVE IT LAURIE

One of my favorite things to do is MOVE...

Walking,
Running,
Jumping,
& Dancing.

It doesn't matter what... I like to move it, move it!

I know that if my mom was healthy, she would always be two steps ahead of me. That's how is whole campaign started. I just wanted to help her reach the goal of one day being able to dance again. I'm not saying she used to be a "dancer", although I was told she used to strut her stuff on top of bar tables when out with her friends...

All I know is that woman wants to move more than anything. There are a whole lot of people who take mobility for granted. That's where this idea sparked. Laurie can always use motivation to keep up the diet, exercise and all the other activities we are trying out. I would like to start an on-going Facebook post series called "Keep Laurie Moving".

I would love to have people post ways that they "move" and why it is so important to them. Words of encouragement are always a great thing to hear when sometimes you can feel all alone. But Laurie is very much not alone in this, and we need to show her that.

So let's get moving and posting!

Here is the recipe I mentioned I would post from Facebook.
My mom made this earlier this week and said it was great.
And of course, like everything we post...it was extremely healthy too!

This is baked carrot cake, zucchini bread oatmeal.

How delicious does this look?
Recipe to come!

Kisses from Curtis!

Wow, it has sure been a while since this blog has been updated. Terrible!
For those who don't know, I am in Northern Michigan for the summer so I am not able to go to appointments with my mom but we are staying in close touch.

I am still making necklaces and just uploaded some a couple of days ago.

Laurie is now going to see a massage therapist in addition to an acupuncturist and naturopath. We had our appointment with the National MS Society a couple weeks ago and we are going to start getting involved with what they are doing to "BeatMS".

My mom is going to try out their support group that tries all different methods of healing. The society also has a "Listening" program that allows MS patients who want to talk the ability to speak with another about anything. My mom loves talking on the phone and because she has MS she will be able to relate better to other people living with Multiple Sclerosis.

I will be participating in the first Muck Fest race for MS on August 3rd at Belle Isle in Detroit! It is going to be great! Check it out below and if your up for it let's do it together!

MUCK FEST!

I have also created a Facebook page exculsive to The Laurie Campaign to Beat MS. Help me keep Laurie going, write encouraging words and post photos, healthy recipes and more to the page! Thanks!

Love and miss you mamma :)

Acupuncture and Naturopathy

Hello All!

We had an acupuncture and naturopathy appointment yesterday.
It was so eye opening and I think this could be the key to getting better!

The acupuncture was interesting. It used some of the same principles as Tai-Chi but with needles. Laurie had four needles in her head to increase blood flow to the brain. The needles around her knees to the inside of her ankles were to improve circulation and blood flow as well.

It was a little freaky at first for me but as the acupuncturist, Colleen Porter was explaining each poke to us, I knew my mom was in good hands.

A Naturopath is somewhere between a holistic doctor and a nutritionist.
Dr. Hallie Armstrong was so incredibly helpful and understanding. This first appointment was designed to get to know my mom's habits and disabilities.
We had a blood test done in order to determine her different chemical levels. Once we receive that information, a comprehensive diet plan will be created.

Within the first 2 minutes with the Naturopath we showed her Terry L. Wahls book, Minding My Mitochondria. She was so thrilled that we were working out of this book already and she knew all about it. THANK GOD! Someone who believes in this. We are finally on the road to awesome!

So keep in touch with us, especially in the next month because some awesome things are about to happen.

And Special thanks to everyone who has been purchasing necklaces! They are going like crazy! Much appreciated!

Time to Present!

Hello Everyone,

Long time no see! As some of you may know, I am a senior at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. I have been preparing to present this Laurie Campaign to Beat MS "Passion Project" so I have been slacking with the blog posts.

If you are a student at CCS feel free to stop by the TC 8th floor
(open area right when you open the doors) at 4:30
to watch the presentation.

Other senior Advertising students will be presenting their
Passion Projects as well.

Really good stuff guys...you should try and make it.

Just because the posts slowed down doesn't mean that we are not working hard.
My mom is still keeping up with the diet and is gong to see an acupuncturist this Wednesday! My mom will also be on the CCS campus today for our presentation. Come meet her, she is a true inspiration...promise :)

Always more to come!
